Destination Dispatch: The Traffic Tech Cutting Wait Times in High-Rises
Destination dispatch (sometimes called destination control) has moved from a premium high-rise feature to something we're now specifying on a growing share of mid-rise commercial projects too. Instead of pressing a simple up/down call button, occupants key in their destination floor at a lobby kiosk (or app) before boarding, and the system groups passengers heading to similar floors into the same car.
Why it works
Conventional elevator dispatch decides which car to send only after a passenger boards and presses a floor button — by then, the system has already committed a car to a trip it can't fully optimize. Destination dispatch has the floor information before boarding, so it can group compatible trips and reduce the number of intermediate stops per run.
What the data typically shows
- Meaningfully reduced average wait time in higher-traffic buildings, especially during up-peak (morning arrival).
- Fewer intermediate stops per trip, which shortens overall travel time even though wait time is what passengers notice most.
- Better handling capacity from the same number of cars — relevant for buildings that are traffic-constrained but don't have shaft space to add another elevator.
Destination dispatch is a traffic-engineering decision, not just a technology purchase — the benefit depends heavily on your building's actual traffic pattern. We model expected wait-time and handling-capacity improvement before recommending it, because in low-traffic buildings the benefit often doesn't justify the cost.
Where it makes the most sense
High-rise office towers with concentrated up-peak traffic see the clearest benefit. Mixed-use and residential buildings with more distributed traffic patterns see a smaller, though still real, improvement — worth modeling before committing capital.
