Why Elevator Entrapments Are Making Headlines Again
Local news cycles have carried more elevator entrapment stories in the last year than in the previous several combined. Some of that is reporting bias — a viral video travels further than it used to — but the underlying trend it's pointing at is real: entrapments correlate closely with deferred maintenance in aging building stock.
What actually causes most entrapments
In our inspection experience, the large majority of entrapments trace back to a small set of root causes: door interlock or contact failures, controller faults during a power-quality event, brake or safety-circuit trips from worn components, and rope/traction issues on older units. Very few are the dramatic "free-fall" scenario that headlines imply — the safety systems are specifically designed to prevent that, and they generally work.
Why the trend is upward now
- A large wave of elevators installed 15–20 years ago is now aging into the highest-failure part of its lifecycle.
- AMC contracts have been under commercial pressure, and reactive (not preventive) maintenance is more common than it should be.
- More buildings now have CCTV and residents with phones, so incidents that once went unreported are now visible and shared.
An entrapment is frightening for occupants but is rarely dangerous on a well-maintained elevator — the safety circuit is designed to stop the car safely, not let it fall. The real risk is a building not knowing whether its safety systems are actually being tested on schedule.
What to check this month
