IoT-Connected Elevators: What Remote Monitoring Actually Catches
IoT connectivity is now standard on new elevator installations and increasingly offered as a retrofit kit for existing units. The pitch is simple — catch problems before they become breakdowns. The reality is more specific: remote monitoring is excellent at some things and largely irrelevant to others.
What it reliably catches
- Door cycle-time drift (a common early sign of operator or sensor wear).
- Ride-quality metrics (acceleration smoothness, vibration) trending away from baseline.
- Fault-code frequency and patterns across a portfolio of buildings, which is hard to see manually across separate AMC reports.
- Downtime and callback tracking that holds AMC vendors accountable against their SLA with real data, not anecdote.
What it doesn't replace
Remote monitoring reads what sensors are wired to report — it does not replace a physical inspection of ropes, brake linings, guide rails or safety gear. We've seen buildings treat a connected dashboard as a substitute for periodic hands-on inspection, which is precisely the gap where mechanical wear issues get missed.
Think of IoT monitoring as a continuous early-warning layer that makes your maintenance program more responsive — not a replacement for the maintenance program itself. The two should be evaluated and budgeted separately.
Questions worth asking your AMC vendor
If your building already has connected elevators, ask your AMC provider how alerts translate into an actual response SLA, and whether you (the owner) get direct dashboard access or only a summarized report. Data you can't see is a feature you're paying for on faith.
