Elevator safety checklist for building owners
Most elevator safety issues we find during inspections aren't dramatic — they're small compliance gaps that accumulate because nobody was asking the right questions. Here are ten a building owner or facility manager should be able to answer at any time.
- Is the overspeed governor tested and tagged within the last required interval?
- Do all landing doors have working mechanical and electrical interlocks?
- Is there a functioning emergency communication device (alarm/intercom) in the car?
- Is there a documented, current AMC in place with a licensed provider?
- Are fire-service / recall functions (if applicable) tested periodically?
- Is the machine room (or MRL access) free of unrelated storage and properly ventilated?
- Are pit and machine room lighting and stop switches functional?
- Has a third-party safety audit been conducted in the last 12 months?
- Are maintenance call logs and breakdown history being tracked?
- Does staff know the emergency evacuation and entrapment procedure?
