Why is my elevator shaking?

Vibration and shaking in an elevator car is one of the most common complaints building owners bring to us — and one of the easiest to misdiagnose if you're not looking systematically. In our experience, the cause almost always falls into one of four categories.

1. Guide shoe or rail misalignment

If the car rubs or bounces sideways, especially at certain floors, the guide shoes or rails may be worn or misaligned. This tends to produce a rhythmic, side-to-side vibration that gets worse with speed.

2. Rope or sheave wear

Traction ropes that are unevenly worn, or a sheave with groove wear, can cause a vertical bounce or judder, particularly during acceleration and deceleration.

3. Drive/controller tuning

On VVVF-controlled elevators, poor drive tuning (acceleration/deceleration curves, S-curve parameters) can produce a jerky ride even when the mechanical system is healthy. This is often the cheapest fix — and the most overlooked.

4. Machine or bearing wear

In geared machines particularly, worn gearbox bearings or coupling wear can introduce vibration that scales with speed and load.

Our approach: we measure before we guess. A vibration and ride-quality assessment (part of the Elevator Health Check) isolates which of these four is actually happening in your car before we recommend a fix.

What this means for your maintenance budget

Guide shoe and drive-tuning issues are typically inexpensive to correct. Rope, sheave and machine wear point toward a more significant repair or modernization decision. Getting the diagnosis right up front avoids paying twice.
