Gearless vs. geared elevators
"Should I choose gearless or geared?" is one of the most common questions we get during elevator design consultations. The honest answer is: it depends on speed, travel height and budget — but here's the engineering behind the decision.
Geared machines
Use a gearbox to reduce motor speed to the required car speed. They're generally lower cost, well suited to lower speeds (typically up to ~1.5–2.0 m/s) and mid-rise buildings, but have more moving parts subject to wear (gearbox, worm gear) and require periodic gear oil changes.
Gearless machines
Use a direct-drive, permanent-magnet motor with no gearbox. They run more quietly, need less routine maintenance, handle higher speeds (up to and beyond 4+ m/s) and are the standard for high-rise buildings — but come at a higher upfront cost.
Our rule of thumb
- Low-rise, budget-sensitive, speed ≤ 1.5 m/s → geared is often adequate.
- Mid-to-high rise, speed > 1.5–2.0 m/s, or where machine room space/noise matters → gearless is usually the better long-term choice.
- MRL (machine-room-less) configurations are almost always gearless.
