VVVF explained, in plain English
VVVF stands for Variable Voltage Variable Frequency — the drive technology almost all modern elevators use to control the motor. If your building still runs an older AC-2 or DC drive system, understanding VVVF is the first step to understanding why modernization is usually recommended.
What it does
A VVVF drive continuously adjusts the voltage and frequency supplied to the elevator's motor, allowing smooth, precise control of acceleration, speed and deceleration — instead of the more abrupt, fixed-step control older systems use.
Why it matters
- Ride quality: smoother acceleration/deceleration curves (S-curves) reduce jerk and improve comfort.
- Leveling accuracy: precise speed control near the floor improves stopping accuracy.
- Energy consumption: VVVF drives typically use significantly less energy than older resistance or DC drive systems, especially at partial load.
- Reduced mechanical wear: smoother starts and stops reduce stress on ropes, brakes and the machine.
If your elevator "lurches" at the start or "thumps" when stopping, that's often a sign you're still on an older non-VVVF or poorly tuned drive.
